Just across the harbour from Downtown Auckland, the marine village of Devonport is one of the city's oldest suburbs. With its picture postcard Victorian villas, pretty beaches and stylish shops, Devonport is a great place to spend a day or afternoon.
Climb to the top of the distinctive volcanic cones of Mount Victoria or North Head for fantastic views across the city and nearby islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Take a stroll along King Edward Parade, with its views across the harbour, or along Cheltenham Beach, with its stunning views of Rangitoto Island.
Devonport is home to many interesting art galleries, boutiques and gift shops, most of which are situated along the main street, Victoria Road. Spend an afternoon browsing, and discover everything from glassware and paintings by New Zealand artists to second hand books, jewellery, designer labels and unique kiwi gift ideas.
Devonport is generally bustling with people, many of whom are sitting outside in street cafes, watching the world go by. The village is a popular place to eat out - take the ferry over for morning tea, a lazy lunch or a more formal evening meal.
