New Cycle Map for Waiheke island Cycling
Media Release – 21 October, 2010
The arrival of warmer spring weather is already luring visitors out to the beaches and wine trails of Waiheke Island. Cyclists in particular love the laid - back pace of life on the island, and the chance to
catch ferries from downtown Auckland and Devonport with their bikes.
A new cycling map published this week by Fullers will make island cycling even easier, with information on rides connecting beaches, vineyards, cafes and restaurants. The map features headlands with stunning views of the Gulf, valleys of superb bush, and the beachfront camping spots and bird watching at Whakanewha Regional Park.
Cycle Action Auckland has helped plot the cycle routes and is delighted the map is ready for spring riding. Spokesperson Barb Cuthbert is a part- time island resident, and reports ‘Last summer I was always helping groups and single cyclists find the easiest routes to explore the island. They raved about the beaches, panoramic views and vineyards, so I felt a map would be the next step towards ‘island cycling nirvana.’
‘Cycle Action supports Fullers bike- friendly initiatives in carrying bikes for free on ferries and their plans to install bike racks on the Waiheke buses. I’m also hoping the map will help make Waiheke a winner in the next round of National Cycle trails.’
The map features four trails; the ‘Beach/Wine-Lovers Trail’, ‘Easy Life Loop’, ‘Nature Trail’, ‘Stony Batter Trail’. They offer adventure, gourmet touring, family beach hopping and nature watching, as well as catering for varying skills and levels of fitness. The maps are available from Fullers ticket offices or at www.fullers.co.nz where vouchers for 10% discount off bike hire from Bike Central, Cycle Auckland and Waiheke Bike Hire can also be downloaded.
