SAFETY FIRST FOR WAIHEKE SCHOOL CHILDREN

Media Release – August, 2008

Waiheke school children are being given the chance to climb aboard Fullers' largest vessel and learn some important safety lessons first hand.

Around 220 Waiheke Primary and Tehurihi School students aged from 7 to 10 years will be given a guided tour of ‘Superflyte', at Kennedy Point on Monday, August 25.

The ‘Superflyte' crew and Fullers shore staff will show children around the vessel, pointing out key safety features including life rafts, life boats and life rings.

The tour will also include lifejacket demonstrations and a visit to the vessel's engine room.

Both Fullers and teaching staff see the visit as instrumental in developing a relationship with its passengers at an early age.

Fullers operations manager Ian Greenslade says ferries are an integral part of island life, and it is important that local children are familiar with the vessels.

“As Waiheke Islanders these children will have to use ferries much more often than mainlanders, so it's necessary they are equipped with the key safety messages.”

The tours will take place from 10am to 11.30am and 12pm to 1.30pm.
