Picnic at Motutapu with the Motutapu Restoration Trust
Motutapu, Sunday 15 October
Recreate the premier picnics of the early 1900’s at the Reid Homestead, Home Bay which were hosted by James Reid, owner of Motutapu farm and island at the time. Play outdoor games such as croquet and sack races in the spirit of these huge picnics.
Learn about the steam ferries and special picnic train which connected people from waterways around Auckland and Thames to the island. It’s said that up to 14000 picnickers came to one picnic day, arriving on every available ferry. Go on a short walk to WWII gun emplacements for an amazing view of the Hauraki Gulf. Bring your family and a picnic lunch. Refreshments are available at Reid Homestead-hot drinks and snacks.
