In partnership with Auckland Zoo, Rotoroa Island Trust has developed educational conservation field trips to inspire a generation of young New Zealanders to love and respect the Hauraki Gulf.

Learning focuses

  • Importance of conservation, and practical steps students can take to help protect the environment
  • Facilitated by Auckland Zoo educators, interactive learning experiences, including identifying wildlife and using GPS to find tracking tunnels
  • Curriculum-linked and best suited to schools that have current environmental and/or conservation science programmes in place or are about to establish one

Education level

Year 5 – 13 students


  • Ferry fare – Prices start at $8.00 per student from Auckland. One accompanying adult for every six students travels free. $45.00 per additional adult
  • Costs are generously subsidised, thanks to the Rotoroa Island Trust

Availability and booking

Bookings are essential. Spaces are limited and require submission of the application form. There is also a pre-requisite of a two-hour teacher workshop at Auckland Zoo. See more details here.

Individual class field trips will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17 October to 14 December, 2017. Special rates apply only for visits on scheduled days during the school term.
