Perpetual Guardian Sculpture on the Gulf is back for its 12th edition, presented by Perpetual Guardian and Waiheke Art Gallery. For five weeks this summer, large-scale contemporary sculpture lines a 2.5 km clifftop coastal walkway above Matiatia Bay, with the Hauraki Gulf as its backdrop.

This year’s exhibition, The Ocean Remembers the Shore, is curated by Heather Galbraith and Benjamin Work and draws on Waiheke’s original name, Te Motu Ārai Roa, the long sheltering island. Artists respond to the meeting of land and sea, shelter, regeneration and the connections between us.

Getting there is part of the experience. Board a Fullers360 ferry in downtown Auckland, and 40 minutes later you’re stepping off at Matiatia, where the exhibition begins. Book your ferry, sculpture shuttle bus and exhibition entry together below.

Make a day of it, or stay longer. Waiheke has vineyards, world-class food, beaches and scenery that feeds the soul. Bring the whole whānau too: children 15 and under get free exhibition entry and ride the sculpture bus for free.
