3. Getting on the ferry

To load your bike on the ferry, wheel it on and look for the bike racks or hooks. Please ask our crew if you are not sure.

Passengers may bring their bike or scooter on board most of our sailings, this is free of charge and is subject to available space. This applies to standard sized bikes with pedals, standard sized battery assisted e-bikes with pedals, e-unicycles, stand up scooters and mobility scooters only. Petrol powered bikes, electric dirt bikes or oversized electric bikes are not permitted onboard. Most of our vessels are equipped with bike racks. Using these storage options reduces the risk of your bike falling and causing damage or injury. On vessels that bike storage is unavailable, please ensure you position your bike safely and out of the way of other passengers.

Bikes and scooters need to be stored outside on the back deck of most of our vessels. Two of our larger vessels (Kekeno and Ika Kakahi) are designed to carry bikes inside the cabin. If storing your bike or scooter on the outside back deck make sure your bike is not stored in front of any emergency equipment, doorways (including bathrooms and engine rooms) and access ways. If you’re unsure then please ask one of our friendly crew members for assistance.

Fire extinguishers are carried on board all vessels. E-bikes, e-scooters and e-unicycles need to be stored outside on the back deck of most of our vessels because of their lithium batteries. Lithium fire blankets are carried on select ferries where e-bikes, e-scooters and e-unicycles are permitted inside the cabin. Charging of e-bikes, e-scooters and e-unicycles is not permitted whilst on board.

Bikes, scooters and unicycles are not permitted on sailings to and from any of the Department of Conservation (DoC) managed islands which include: Rangitoto Island, Rotoroa Island, Motutapu Island and Motuihe Island.
