Explore Rotoroa Island with a guided walk by the Rotoroa Rangers. Your guide will lead you as you walk among the regenerating native forest, with plenty of wildlife, lookout points and beaches along the way.

Tour overview

  • Learn stories about the island's natural history, restoration and its social history as an island for addiction treatment
  • Uncover the best spots to see native wildlife including takahe, whitehead, saddleback, pateke ducks and kiwi.
  • Take in the island's rugged coastline, sandy beaches and regenerating forest. Visit the seven-metre high sculpture by New Zealand artist, Chris Booth, on the island’s southern headland.

Level of fitness

A reasonable level of fitness is required. Walking tracks are either hard surface, grass, or boardwalks, with many wooden steps. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes.

If you have a child in a pushchair, please be prepared for some lifting. Mountain buggies are more suitable than regular pushchairs for the majority of tracks. Alternatively, we recommend travelling with a baby/toddler backpack.
